Mateo's Magic Bus on KFFR 88.3FM - The Steve Skinner Interview

Updated: Jul 7

Broadcast high in the Rockies Wednesdays from 2PM - 4PM MT on KFFR 88.3-FM and KFFR.org, Mateo’s Magic Bus takes listeners on a journey around the world, exploring the roots of jazz and blues alongside music from today and the past decades that has been influenced by these incredible art forms.

On this week's ride, host DJ Mateo is joined by co-pilot Steve Skinner, skipping a stone across his national, decades-long music career with literally dozens of albums created and released since the 80s from California to the Pacific Northwest, East Coast and decades here in Colorado.

As a lifelong fan of music, on again off again musician, and now for over 5 years as DJ Mateo driving Mateo’s Magic Bus every week on KFFR 88.3 FM, I guess I’ll qualify myself as knowing a few things about the craft. One thing you learn from a lifelong love of something like music is for however much you know, there is so much to learn - case in point Steve Skinner.

Steve is one of those musicians, of the thousands and thousands out there who are amazing songwriters, improvisers, producers, players, singers that haven’t achieved headline status, wide fame or fortune, but continue to produce and play for the excellent craft, the love and fun of it, influencing all those around them, teaching, and creating community wherever they go.

For myself, walking into the studios of KFFR in Fraser, CO over 5 years ago, Steve helped me to achieve one of my life's dreams in becoming a radio DJ, something he has done for hundreds of others over the years as a leader in community radio here in Colorado, first at KDNK and then KFFR.

Behind it all he has been writing, producing and playing music over his whole career. In this wonderful time capsule and interview, we skip a stone across the years of Steve's work, just sampling a few bits, but enough that you can hear his amazing soul and genius.

Please stop by Steve's Bandcamp page to see the depth and breadth of his contributions - he's now based in the Philly area and who knows what new avenues he will pursue as he opens new doors there. Enjoy the interview (Soundcloud link below) and as always...

Rock on!
